Key Steps to Building a Custom Gunite Pool

There are many stages and components that go into building a custom swimming pool. So today we are going to look at some of the different stages and what you should expect.

Depending on the type of construction and scale of the project, the different phases will vary. Here’s a short summary of how a gunite inground pool is built:

Pool Layout

After you and our designer have planned the perfect pool design for you, it’s time to get started. CPC Pools creates an accurate 3D design for each pool and submits all plans and permits to HOA’s and local county planning departments. Before excavation, your pool is laid out according to pool plan specs.

Pool Excavation

Swimming pool excavation is the most important stage in the construction of a new swimming pool. “Dig Day” as it is often called, is one of the most exciting days when building an inground concrete pool. Now that your dream of having your backyard transformed with a pool is really coming true, it’s fun to watch it take shape.

Most inground pools are dug using a excavator and can take approximately 3 to 6 hours for a standard pool. But timing can vary due to number of things, such as access, size, shape, soil conditions, dirt removal, etc. CPC Pools has over 30 years of qualified pool excavation experience.

Swimming Pool Rebar

After a thick layer of stone is spread at the base of the pool for stabilization and to prevent settling. A steel rebar reinforcement frame is installed as the skeleton of the pool and for the gunite to hold on to. It also prevents the pool from cracking.

Pool Plumbing

In a swimming pool plumbing system, there are pipes that bring water from the pool (suction pipes), and one or more pipes that take water back to the pool (return pipes).

Gunite

Now comes the unique process of “shooting the Gunite” to form the hard concrete shell of your pool. This important stage pertains to the structural part of the pool. A gunite concrete mix is pneumatically applied to the rebar in the pool. CPC Pools use 25% more gunite than most Charlotte area pool builders. More gunite means a thicker wall and a longer lasting pool.

Swimming Pool Tile & Coping

The next step in the construction process is to hand-lay tile around the perimeter of the pool. Tile is a beautiful product that comes in so many shapes, colors and textures. It can change a pool from a basic backyard oasis to an elegant, stunning work of art.

Since water is naturally level, any errors in the straightness or elevation of the pool tile will be instantly visible, therefore CPC Pools use their highly experienced craftsmen to handle all the tile work.

Pump & Filtration Equipment

An energy-efficient pump is installed to move the water from and back to the pool, as well as a filter to catch debris (such as leaves & dirt) out of the pool. All helping to keep your pool water sparkling clear and refreshingly clear.

Pool Decking

The next phase is pouring or laying the decking. Either concrete is poured around the pool or natural stone and/or travertine pavers are laid to match whatever finish you choose.

Plaster

Plaster is the most common interior finish for many concrete pools, and there are many choices of colors available. A good plaster finish will make the concrete pool smooth and waterproof. CPC Pools has their own certified in-house plaster crew and offers a 10 year warranty.

Pool Fill & Start-Up

Once the pool interior is cleaned and all of the fittings/connections are set. The pool is ready to be filled with water. After the pool is full with water, the equipment is started up and the chemicals are added. At this time, a walk-through is scheduled with the customer to make sure everything agreed to has been completed.

After this stage, your pool is complete and it’s time to swim!

Top 5 Reasons to Choose a Concrete Swimming Pool

At CPC Pools, we’re proud to build the finest swimming pools in the Carolinas. As a Charlotte area pool builder, we create beautiful backyard swimming pools that our customers and their families love to enjoy. We love to build custom concrete pools, and that’s because we believe this is the absolute best option available. It’s not about “cookie cutter” pools that don’t last and can’t give you the features you want. Concrete offers many benefits to the householder considering buying a pool.

Thinking of going with a fiberglass pool or another material? Check out these 5 reasons to choose a custom concrete swimming pool instead:

1. You can have way more fun with the design.
If you want to get creative with the design of your swimming pool, concrete is the way to go. This versatile material allows you to design the pool of your dreams, by changing depth, length, width, and even the shape of your pool. Our design team at CPC Pools can help turn your vision into a tangible backyard creation. Concrete is the material of choice for those who want something special. From small pools to large and luxurious pools, concrete is where it’s at.

2. Concrete is the most durable of pool materials, particularly in the Carolina’s.
An in-ground swimming pool is a significant investment; you want to choose a product that will stand the test of time. Concrete is a long-lasting, tried and tested material that pool builders have been working with for several decades. In warmer climates like North Carolina, durable concrete will be around for many years to come. And when you install a backyard swimming pool, you’re adding incredible value to your home.

3. Concrete swimming pools tend to stay cooler.
When relaxing into your swimming pool on a hot day, you want the water to be cool and refreshing. With a custom concrete pool, you can have confidence that your pool water is going to remain a near perfect temp. This is not the case in pools made with other materials, which often tend to be too warm. For perfect temperatures, choose concrete for your backyard pool.

4. You can go crazy with customization.
Concrete has the flexibility in construction to incorporate waterfalls, spas, tanning ledges and other unique water features. This is one of the most enjoyable parts of designing your dream pool, and also ensures your creation is a spectacular aspect of your yard.

5. Custom Concrete pools look more luxurious.
Pool building options come and go, but most often they are just passing trends. Concrete pools are associated with luxury and quality because of their durable nature and ability to customize. For discerning tastes, concrete is guaranteed to please.

When choosing a custom concrete pool builder, you will want to be sure to select an established company that has a reputation for excellence – and that has plenty of experience in building the backyard pool of your choice.
